2 days after Thanksgiving, 1 day after Black Friday, in the early morning sunshine, 20 volunteers came to the San Francisco Ecology Center’s main project located at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts. Situated between the 2 highest points in the city, Twin Peaks and Mt.Davidson, this quarter acre farm and orchard plot has the ambitious goal of educating the students on the positive aspects of home grown fresh and healthy organic foods. The fringe benefit is providing the school with the finished products. The 20 volunteers are part of an ongoing outreach program of non-profit community agencies sponsored by Project 20. Once a month, Project 20 provides an alternative community service project in different neighborhoods by highlighting their specific service to the participants. Along with the free T-shirt of the month, subtraction of community service hours in lieu of fine payments, there is hope that by exposing the programs of these non-profit agencies thru actual service it will provide not only awareness, but future voluntary efforts.
Last month’s kickoff at Lowell High School was a joint effort of Department of Public Works, Lowell High School and various other community agencies. December’s project with be at Mother’s Brown shelter and kitchen on Saturday December 17th.
